Greek mythology

Greek mythology involves a pantheon of gods and goddesses worshiped by the ancient civilization of Greece. The rich history of this mythos has been used in many sci fi and fantasy works.

Heaven and Earth

Unlike some other religion, Greek mythology does not contain a creation myth where a god or gods created the heavens and earth. In the Greek tradition, Heaven (Uranus) Earth (Gaea) created the gods, among other creatures.

Titans

Among the children of Uranus and Gaea were the first Pantheon of elder gods, called Titans. The ruled over was was called the "golden age" of Greece. They included:

  • Oceanus, titan of salt water
  • Coeus, titan of prophecy and intelligence
  • Crius, titan of leadership and domesticated animals
  • Hyperion,titan of life and the sun's energy
  • Iapetus, titan of mortality
  • Theia, titaness of sight
  • Rhea, titaness of fertility
  • Themis, titaness of law, justice and order
  • Mnemosyne, titaness of memory
  • Phoebe, titaness of brilliant refection (metal lustre, jewel sparkle, moon light)
  • Tethys, titaness of fresh water
  • Cronus, titan of time

Olympians

The olympians are the 12 gods and goddesses most associated with Greek mythology. They are the either children of Cronus or Zeus, including:

  • Zeus, defeater of the Titans and King of the Olympians. Son of Cronus and Rhea.
  • Poseidon, god of the Mediterranean Sea (later considered god of all seas). Son of Cronus and Rhea.
  • Hades, god of the underworld. Son of Cronus and Rhea.
  • Hestia, goddess of the hearth (warmth of home). Daughter of Cronus and Rhea.
  • Hera, goddess of families. Daughter of Cronus and Rhea.
  • Ares, god of war. Son of Zeus and Hera.
  • Athena, goddess of wisdom. Spontaneous daughter of Zeus (no mother).
  • Apollo, god of the Sun and music. Son of Zeus and his cousin Leto.
  • Aphrodite, goddess of beauty. Born from the foam caused when Chronos was castrated and his gentials tossed into the sea. (sometimes said to be the daughter of Zeus and Dione.)
  • Hermes, god of trade. Son of Zeus and Maia.
  • Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Daughter of Zeus and his cousin Leto.
  • Hephaestus, god of metallurgy and the forge. Son of Zeus and Hera.

Minor Olympians

Other, lesser agricultural Olympians include:

  • Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Daughter of Cronus and Rhea.
  • Dionysus, god of wine. son of Zeus and Semele.
  • Hebe, goddess of youth. Daughter of Zeus and Hera.
  • Eilithyia, goddess of childbirth. Daughter of Zeus and Hera.
