Gravity Hills are slopes where it appears that a car will roll up hill. The effect may appear to observers to be a gravitational anomaly, which accounts for the name. Gravity hills are also called Magnetic Hills.
Theories
There are three common theories put forward in these cases:
- The effect is an optical illusion, and nothing paranormal is occuring
- The effect is caused by gravity behaving other than is typical. Local stories may blame the effect on the presence of a meteorite or other subterranean object
- Ghosts push the car (in neutral) up the hill. A common legend is a crashed school bus, and some stories will include child-size handprints (from the ghosts of the dead children) on the car
Specific Examples
There is a gravity hill in Altadena, California. It really works. The story goes that a school bus was on the way back from a field trip when it lost control and fell off the cliff. When you head down the mountain and put your car is Neutral, your car will roll backwards. If you turn around heading up and put your car in neutral, your car will stand still.
