Blackmark, said to be the first graphic novel.

A graphic novel is a long form comic book. But unlike traditional comic magazines, a graphic novel usually contains a complete story arc within the work.

The literary form got its start in the 1950s in the United States with "picture novels," which were usually tawdry romances meant for adult women. In the 1960s and 1970s, comic book artists in Europe and the U.S. adopted this long-form story telling.

This culminated in 1971 with the publication by Bantam Books of Blackmark, created by Gil Kane and Archie Goodwin. The 119-page sword and sorcery epic has become known as the very first true graphic novel.
