Golden Age of Comics

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

The Golden Age of comics was the original era of superhero comic books, beginning in 1938 with the creation of Superman and finishing about 1952 with the cancellation of All-Star Comics featuring the Justice Society of America. This was the original rush when super-heroes were being created and were popular. Comic Books at that time were 64 pages long and only 10 cents each. Among the popular heroes of the era were National's Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Timely's Captain America, the Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, and Fawcett's Captain Marvel. With World War II behind us, most super-hero comic books were canceled, replaced by war, romance, science-fiction, horror, and westerns. The exceptions, maintaining their own books throughout the 1950s, were Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. It would not be until the late 1950s and 1960s that superheroes would again be in vogue.

Superheroes from this era are often called "Golden Age Heroes". When distinguishing between the Superman the 1930s and 1940s from the Superman of today, we would call the older character the "Golden Age Superman".
