Gina Torres

Gina Torres is an American actress well known to scifi fans. She was born in New York City, New York on April 25, 1969. She is the youngest of three children from a Cuban American family. Her father was a typesetter for La Prensa and the Daily News. She developed an interest in music early and enjoyed the Latin music of Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. She attended the High School of Music and Art where she trained in opera and jazz and performed with the gospel choir.

Career

Although she was accepted to several colleges, financial constraints prevented her attendance. She took a job at the Lincoln Center Theater Company answering phones. An audition for a role in Anything Goes lost her the part but gained her an agent. Her first professional job was a role in Dreamgirls. She also performed with Theatre for New Audiences in New York public schools in plays such as Raisin in the Sun and Antigone.

Several stage roles led to a small part in One life to Live. She also guest starred on M.A.N.T.I.S, Law and Order and NYPD Blue. She returned to the stage in The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public. She also appeared in the TV Movies Bed of Roses, The Underworld, and Dark Angel.

Her career began to take off when she appeared on the series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. She appeared in several episodes and the series spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess. Her success led to her being cast in the short-lived series Cleopatra 2525. She later appeared as Jasmine on the TV series Angel and Ana Espinosa on Alias

In 2002 she starred as Zoe Washburne alongside Nathan Fillion in the series Firefly. The show was cancelled before completing a full season but proved to be popular among fans and she reprised the role in the 2005 film Serenity. In 2003, she appeared in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

She has also appeared on Without a Trace and The Shield. She also voiced the character of Vixen on Justice League. In 2006 she became a main character on the series Standoff

Personal Life

She married Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne in September 2002 at The Cloisters in New York City. The couple lives in New Rochell, New York and will have their first child together in 2007.
