History

General Hammond is originally from Texas. During his lengthy career as an Air Force officer, he became acquainted with Lt. Henry Hayes. Hayes eventually became President. Hammond also served in Vietnam, where he lost his best friend when he was shot down. He was certain his friend survived but never heard from or about him again.

In 1969, Hammond was a lieutenant stationed at Cheyenne Mountain. Under orders, he escorted four intruders out of the base. The intruders were SG-1, accidentally transported into the past. They convinced Hammond to help them escape, using a note he'd written in the future as proof of their story. The note was given to Samantha Carter in the episode "1969," when Hammond saw a cut on Carter's hand and remembered the past events.

General Hammond's plan was to retire, until he was transferred to the inactive SGC. When Apophis came through the Stargate in "Children of the Gods", the SGC became active, and he was given a new mandate to acquire alien technologies to defend Earth and establish diplomatic relations with alien cultures. He is accountable to the president of the United States and the joint chiefs of staff. The NID has also interfered with Stargate operations, applying political pressure to manipulate Hammond's command decisions.

Hammond is a widower. He lost his wife to cancer three years before joining the Stargate program. He also has two granddaughters, Kayla and Tessa, who rank #1 on his office phone. In the Season 4 episode "Chain Reaction," Kayla and Tessa's safety was threatened by the NID as a means of forcing Hammond to retire. The source of the threats was traced back to Senator Robert Kinsey. With the evidence against Kinsey as leverage, Hammond was able to return to duty at the SGC.

In the episode "Lost City, Part 2", Hammond was given temporary command of the Earth ship Prometheus. In the battle, he helped defend Earth against Anubis. He gave the desperate order to ram Anubis’s mother ship. Fortunately the ship was destroyed by the Ancient drone weapon, making his plan unnecessary. Hammond also planned to take the Prometheus on a mission to Atlantis. They ship was instead hijacked by Vala Mal Doran.

After Season 7, Hammond was promoted to Lieutenant General and moved on to Homeworld Security at the Pentagon. He was replaced at the SGC by Brigadier General Jack O'Neill.

Don S. Davis is no longer a member of the regular cast of Stargate SG-1 but he has made guest appearances as General Hammond during the eighth and ninth seasons of Stargate SG-1 and the Stargate Atlantis Season 1 episode, "Home."
