Gene L. Coon

Gene L. Coon (b. January 7, 1924July 8, 1973) was a screenwriter and producer, most associated with Star Trek. He is responsible for the creation of the Klingons. He wrote the episode "Errand of Mercy" in which the Klingons make their first appearance. He also created the Prime Directive, the central tenet of the United Federation of Planets.

Prior to his work on Star Trek, he worked on several Western series including Maverick, Bonanza, Wagon Train, Rawhide, Laredo, and Zorro. Following Star Trek, he wrote episodes for The Sixth Sense (TV series), Kung Fu, and Hawkins.

His production credits include It Takes a Thief, Star Trek, and The Wild Wild West.

Coon Married Jaqueline Coon in 1968. He died of lung cancer in 1973
