Eugene Allen Hackman (b. January 30, 1930) is an Academy Award-winning American actor born in San Bernardino, California. Hackman is perhaps best remembered by genre fans for his role as Lex Luthor in Superman: The Movie and its sequels Superman II and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. In addition to his two Oscars for Best Actor in The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven, Hackman also won three BAFTA awards and three Golden Globes and has been nominated multiple times for various performances.
Hackman joined the Marines at 16 and served in Korea. He moved to New York after he was discharged and worked for a while in odd jobs before attending the University of Illinois on the G.I. Bill where he studied journalism. Following his graduation, he tried to make a career in television production but his path veered towards acting. He attended the Pasadena drama school alongside Dustin Hoffman. Both were voted least likely to succeed but nevertheless defied the faulty prediction.
Hackman made his film debut in Mad Dog Coll and made his stage debut in the 1963 off Broadway play, Children at Their Games. His performance earned him a Clarence Derwent award. Hackman drew notice in 1964's Lilith alongside Warren Beatty. He followed up with Hawaii and the war drama, First to Fight. The film proved less than spectacular but his career was on the rise. He appeared with Beatty and Faye Dunaway in the Oscar-winning Crime drama, Bonnie and Clyde, which earned him his first Oscar nomination for Supporting Actor.
Hackman made his genre film debut in the 1969 space drama Marooned. He was nominated for a second Oscar for his role in I Never Sang for My Father and finally won for his role in The French Connection. He also turned in stellar performances in The Conversation, Young Frankenstein' and Night Moves. Other notable films include Under Fire, Uncommon Valor, Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, Wyatt Earp, The Quick and the Dead, Crimson Tide, The Chamber, the Birdcage, Enemy of the State, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Behind Enemy Lines.
