A Gargoyle is a grotesquely carved figure of a human, animal, or other creature, adorning a with an open mouth. The figure projects from the gutter in order to direct water away from the building. Similar building adornments that do not serve as waterspouts are also referred to as gargoyles. Gargoyles have been said to serve as protectors; to scare off evil spirits.
In fiction, gargoyles are often depicted as winged creatures, that transform from stone into living beings as seen in Disney's Gargoyles an animated series in which the stone creatures came to life at night.
