Galaxy Quest (1999) was directed by Dean Parisot, and the cast includes Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Missi Pyle, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Jeremy Howard, and Justin Long. Star Trek may have been a television show about the final frontier, but for some people, it's more--it's a way of life. And with all due respect, and all due affection, the world of Trekkies gets sent up big-time in this little Hollywood parody movie.

Eighteen years after their TV series Galaxy Quest was canceled, members of the cast eke out a living by making appearances at conventions and signing autographs. Their unhappy course takes a turn toward adventure when an alien starship shows up. The literal-minded Thermians have captured the original broadcasts as they beamed out into the universe and they beg for help from the actors, having taken the episodes of Galaxy Quest as factual, and the actors as really, truly space-roving heroes. The Thermians have tried to re-fashion their society and themselves in imitation of the show. But they're caught in the target sights of a nasty piece of work named General Sarris, who intends to rid the universe of all Thermians. With a little help from their rabid fans, the actors must perform their old roles once more, but this time on an actual starship with real lives at stake.

The movie won the 2000 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. Hollywood generally fails to notice the Hugos, but filmmakers Robert Gordon and Dean Parisot showed their science fiction roots and turned up in person at the award ceremony to collect their award and their well-deserved applause.
