Freema Agyeman (January 1, 1979, London, England, UK) is an up-and-coming British actress who genre viewers may have seen in the role of Adeola in the "Army of Ghosts" episode of Doctor Who's 2006 Season. She will be returning for the program's 2007 Season. This time, however, she will be playing an entirely different role: new traveling companion, Martha Jones.

Born in North London, England, to a Ghanaian father and an Iranian mother, Freema graduated from Middlesex University with honors in Performing Arts and Drama (2000). She also studied at Radford University in Virginia.

Appearing first in several theater roles, Agyeman had won her first recurring television role by 2003. This role (Lola Wise on the soap opera Crossroads) would earn her a "Best Newcomer" nomination at the 2003 British Soap Awards. This led to more television appearances in the next three years, including several appearances on the police drama The Bill and a part in an episode of Doctor Who. Freema's performance in this 2006 episode caught the attention of Doctor Who writer/producer Russel T. Davies, who had been attempting to find an actress to play a new companion character for some time.

In oder to avoid breaking the story of her casting, the show's producers went to extraordinary lengths, including sneaking her into further auditions under the cover of darkness and initially telling her that she was auditioning for the part of a regular in Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood. It wasn't until shortly before the actress's third such audition that they told her what she was actually auditioning for.

Freema did eventually appear on Torchwood (as Martha Jones) in the second series/season beginning with the episode Reset.
