Dr. Frank Drake (b. May 28, 1930) is an American astronomer and astrophysicist from Chicago, Illinois. Drake is best known for having created the Drake Equation, a formula calculating the possible number of technologically advanced civilizations in the universe.
Drake is an alumni of Cornell university where he studied astronomy. He later served as an electronics officer on the USS Albany before completing his graduate studies in radio astronomy at Harvard University.
He was one of the early core group of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) researches, which included Carl Sagan, Otto Struve, and Melvin Calvin.
Drake is also the author or co-author of several books.
