Franchise

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Franchises are media properties in the science fiction or fantasy genre that are typically exploited in multiple product forms. A media franchise is an expansion of a single creative work beyond its original medium, whether it be in the form of tie-in novels, movies, games, toys, or a TV series.

Some media franchises come about because the original work is so popular that people clamor to have more of it in other forms. Other franchises, however, are planned out in advance of the launch of the first product, expanding into different media as their popularity grows.

In science fiction and fantasy, the most popular examples of franchises are often successful book series such as Harry Potter, and comics such as Spider-Man, which expand into movies, TV series, and toys.

In TV, the most successful and most famous science fiction franchise is unquestionably Star Trek, which covers five decades of TV, novels, films, and toys, and continues to grow. In this tradition, the much younger SCI FI Channel original series Stargate is a franchise that has expanded from its original movie into two TV series.

In film, sequels are common, particularly in the science fiction genre. The greatest example of this is the Star Wars franchise, which is as much a cultural phenomenon as it is a business success.
