History

Fox Mulder was born on October 13, 1961, in Chilmark, Massachusetts, to Willam, "Bill" Mulder and Elizabeth "Teena" Kuipers Mulder. His father worked for the U.S. State Department and was later revealed to have been a member of the Syndicate, an alliance of powerful government officials conspiring with aliens.

His first word was JFK at eleven months. His younger sister, Samantha was born in 1965. He had a good relationship with Samantha and they had an active childhood together often playing baseball and Stratego together.

Mulder had a good, traditional childhood. He enjoyed science fiction and his favorite TV shows included Star Trek and The Magician. His normal, happy childhood was forever changed on the night of November 27, 1973 when his sister disappeared from their family home. Later in his life, Mulder underwent hypnotic regression and remembered a bright light shining through the window, filling the room. He saw his sister float away on the light, unable to do anything to prevent it. Unable to find any evidence regarding her disappearance, her case remained unresolved. His parents divorced not long after.

Mulder's father was killed by Alex Krychek on the order of The Cigarette Smoking Man. His mother committed suicide after learning she was terminally ill.

Education and Career

Solving the mystery behind Samantha's disappearance became a near obsession for Mulder, leading to a career in solving crime. After high school, he went on to Oxford University where he studied psychology and graduated summa cum laude in 1982. He joined the FBI Academy at Quantico on October 24th, 1986 from which he graduated at the top of his class and received an Award for Public Service. He worked in the Behavioral Science Unit where he created profiles of serial killers. He was very successful and became famous for his profile of serial killer Monty Props. Despite his success in the unit, he gave up his work when he began to examine strange unsolved cases known as The X-Files.

His work on the X-Files earned him derision from his co-workers and he became known as "Spooky" Mulder. He was relegated to the basement where he studied the case files, fueling his obsession with extraterrestrials and unexplained events. In his investigations, he came to believe in a government conspiracy to hide the existence of aliens but finding conclusive evidence proved difficult.

Mulder's work drew the attention of his superiors and they assigned Special Agent Dana Scully a medical doctor to be his partner. Mulder distrusted Scully immediately, believing she'd been sent to spy on him and discredit his work. Scully soon discovered that her superiors expected more than her scientific conclusions on each X-Files case and that Mulder was correct about their intentions.

Despite giving him her loyalty and confidence, Scully was incredibly skeptical. Despite experiencing several inexplicable situations and often being unable to draw an acceptable scientific conclusion in several cases, Scully believed in science exclusively and despite her abduction later in the series, refused to believe in aliens until the last few seasons of the series, when the evidence became overwhelming and undeniable.

Through the greater part of the show's run Mulder and Scully's relationship grew closer but remained platonic. What began as professional courtesy became respect, growing into a devoted friendship. They became closer to each other than they were to anyone else and despite several attempts to separate them professionally, they maintained a strong professional and personal connection. They saved each others' life several times which only strengthened their bong.

Many fans believed strongly in their romance even before conclusive evidence that a romantic relationship existed. The characters had great chemistry and as they grew closer, strong romantic tension that remained ambiguous for a long time.

Scully discovered she might not be able to have children as a result of her cancer treatment. She tried in vitro fertilization and asked Mulder to be the sperm donor. The fertilization failed. In the shows eighth season however, Scully became mysteriously pregnant. Though they believed the child might be an alien hybrid, they were later convinced Mulder was the father. Scully gave William up for adoption for his protection.

Mulder faced several difficulties in his search for the truth. One of his main antagonists was the Cigarette Smoking Man later revealed to be C.G.B. Spender, a conspirator and member of the Syndicate working within the government. He, like several others provided Mulder with information on occasion, sometimes misleading him. In the last season it was eventually revealed that C.G.B. Spender, was likely Mulder's biological father and possibly the father of his sister as well. Mulder also found out that his step-father Bill Mulder was a participant in the conspiracy that led to his sister's abduction. Mulder had a half brother, Jeffrey Spender, also an FBI agent.

Mulder eventually found his sister, only to discover she was one of several clones. He came to believe she was kidnapped and murdered by serial killer John L. Roche, but that proved to be false. Mulder found his sister again in the episode "Redux II", but it was possible she was yet another clone. Though it is implied Samantha died, it remains unclear whether this is actually the case.
