Forever Peace is a 1998 novel by Joe Haldeman.
Premise
The story is set in the year 2043 when the American-led alliance battles against a third-world confederation known as the Ngumi. The war has been ongoing for eight years and nuclear weapons have been used. On the Alliance side, soldiers operate indestructible robotic "soldierboys" from hundreds of miles away. One of these soldiers, physicist, Julian Class, has become overwhelmed with the psychological burdens of constant warfare. Class is near wishing for death just to end the horror.
In orbit around Jupiter, an ambitious scientific experiment is underway. Julian's lover and former adviser, Amelia Harding discovers that the project has the potential to destroy the entire universe. The two attempt to stop the project but standing in their way is "the Hammer of God" an influential Christian cult determined to bringing about the end of days.
