Fancruft is a term used to refer to a perceived low-quality or excessively trivial fan-created original work. In fandom, to label something as "fancruft" is often considered to be a pejorative used mainly by non-fans or anti-fans (mundanes) to describe fan-centric works in a contemptuous way.
Types
Although a pejorative, some of the criticisms of so-called fancruft works may be valid. Typically, in Sci Fi fandom, fancruft-type creations may appear in fansites, wikis and fanzines and may have one or more of the following characteristics:
- The subject matter covered is extremely trivial and may be considered irrelevant by many.
- Fictional happenings presented as real-world fact.
- Fan-centric bias in content presented as factual:
- Omission of negative facts about the subject matter. (Unrealistic portrayal by purposely censoring or avoiding any unpleasant subject matter that sheds a negative light on the subject.)
- Overemphasis on positive or trivial facts. (One fan's opinion or fetish gives a disproportionate coverage of the subject matter.)
- The line between opinion and fact is not easily defined, causing a lack of credibility.
- For works meant to be enjoyed by the general public, an overemphasis on lingo, trivialities and in-jokes may make the end product incomprehensible to those new to the subject matter.
