Fan fiction (also called "fanfic") is a form of amateur literature created from a segment of fandom of genre stories. The idea behind fan fiction is that a fan explores the fictional setting and circumstances not explored by the original writers.

Some original authors actively encourage fan fiction. Some, like Marion Zimmer Bradley and Jacquelyn Lichtenberg started their writing careers with fanfic.
