Fafrotskies (Fall From The Skies) are unexpected things that drop from the atmosphere without an apparent explanation.
The term was coined by neologist and paranormal investigator, Ivan Sanderson. However, recording of frog falls and fish falls is probably most associated with Charles Fort. In fact, they can be considered the classic Fortean phenomenon: something that appears to have objectively happened and does not seem to fit contemporary scientific theory.
Types
The many types of objects that have been reported as falls include:
- Frogs
- Fish
- Blood
- Blocks of ice
- Manufactured items
- Lumps of flesh
- "Angel Hair" a filmy thread-like substance that evaporates
- Rain of odd color and/or texture
Theories
- Since the era of aircraft, some of these falls are blamed on debris, cargo, or airplane parts. While this is likely to be correct in some cases, it is inadequate in many others, particularly those that occurred before 1903
- In the case of fish, it has been suggested that a "whirlwind" (or waterspout) might descend on a pond, scoop up a quantity of water (and fish), separate them through specific density, and then drop the fish somewhere else. This would require very particular atmospheric conditions, and would be at odds with some witness observations (such as the fish falling slowly). It is also difficult to apply to cases where the fish are not native to the area. One would also expect the quantities of water and other lake components to be reported to fall, even if it was somewhere else
- Hoaxes
- Teleportation
