Extraterrestrials)
Xenobiology, or extraterrestrial life, refers to any and all life originating beyond the limits of Earth. While there is currently no known life beyond Earth, Science Fiction abounds with numerous imaginative concepts of alien lifeforms.
Ancient concepts
Belief in life alien to this planet may have begun several thousand years ago. Some modern thinkers have attributed the successes of the great civilizations of Egypt and South America to alien influence and the existence of Ancient Astronauts.
Aliens in Literature
Film & Television
While literature allows for great flexibility in the appearance of alien lifeforms, film tends to be more limiting due to the physical limitations of the actors and technology. As a result, most aliens are humanoid in form, possessing arms, legs, and heads in all the usual places with few exceptions. It is not uncommon to find the more drastically different alien species represented as evil or dangerous to humans as seen in Aliens and Starship Troopers . Scientists do not expect extraterrestrial life, should it exist, to be as similar to humans as depicted on film or to express similar behavior.
Aliens who want to take over Earth for themselves is a common theme seen in such films as Independence Day and The War of the Worlds.
