Equilibrium is a 2002 Sci Fi action film from writer and director Kurt Wimmer. Christian Bale stars as Cleric John Preston a law enforcement agent for a fascist government in a world where emotional expression has been made illegal in all its forms. Art, music, and books are forbidden and the use of and expression of ideas inspired by such are punishable by death. Preston's job is to hunt down "sense offenders", those citizens who determinedly resist the law. When Preston misses a dose of the drug prozium, responsible for inhibiting emotion, he begins having difficulty performing his duties. He begins to experience the beauty of emotions and sympathizes with those he once hunted and begins plotting to destroy the order he once devoutly served.
The film featured a form of gun based conceptual combat, devised by Wimmer, known as gun kata which involves the use of two firearms at once. Having analyzed numerous gun battles the creators of the combat style determined that the the distribution of opponents is a predictable element and that an individual can adapt certain positions that minimize the statistical chances of being hit while maximizing damage to all opponents, as such, the art emphasizes body positioning.
The film received only a limited US release. It became available on DVD on May 13, 2003.
