Eoin Colfer (born May 14, 1965) is an Irish children's author best known for his Artemis Fowl book series. Colfer grew up in Ireland with his four brothers. Both his parents were teachers. Fowler became interested in writing as a child, after learning about Vikings in elementary school.

Colfer earned his degree at Dublin University and followed in his parents footsteps, teaching primary school. He married in 1991 and along with his wife worked in Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy for four years. His first published work, Benny and Omar was published in 1998 and was based on his experiences in Tunisia. He published a sequel in 1999 and was finally able to resign his teaching job and become a full time author after the publication of his first Artemis Fowl book.
