Ender's Shadow is a 1999 novel by Orson Scott Card. The novel runs chronologically parallel to Ender's Game and is followed in the series by Shadow of the Hegemon. The story is told from the perspective of Bean and is set in the year 2170. Bean is an escapee from an illegal genetic engineering laboratory. Extremely intelligent, he joins a gang of children led by Poke. His intelligence attracts the interest of a nun, Sister Carlotta, who recruits him to be trained at Battle School where he meets Ender Wiggins and the two become friends.
