Emily Browning (b. December 7 1988, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) is an Australian actress. Browning may be remembered by American audiences for her role as Violet Baudelaire in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Browning got her start in professional acting after being noticed in a school play. Browning landed an agent and made her film debut in The Echo of Thunder. TV roles followed in the short-lived series High Flyers, Blonde Something in the Air and Ghost Ship.
Browning came to the notice of international audiences in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship filmed in Australia and starring Gabriel Byrnes and Julianna Marguiles. That year, she won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Young Actress, for her role in Halifax f.p: Playing God. In 2003, Browning appeared in another American/Australian, production Darkness Falls and alongside well known fellow Australians Heath Ledger and Naomi Watts in Ned Kelly.
In 2004, Browning auditioned for, and landed the role of Violet in A Series of Unfortunate Events, based on the popular Lemony Snicket children's book series. The production was filmed in Los Angeles. She returned to Australia for the 2005 drama, Stranded. In 2008, she returned to North America to film the remake of the Korean horror thriller, Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters).
