Elsa Lanchester (Elizabeth Sullivan) (October 28, 1902 – December 26, 1986) is an English character actress and former dance instructor born in Lewisham, London. Lanchester married Charles Laughton in 1929 and moved to Hollywood in 1940. In James Whale’s classic Bride of Frankenstein (1935) she portrayed both creator Mary Shelley and the memorable shock-haired mate for the Monster. She also appeared in Terror in the Wax Museum (1973, as Julia Hawthorn), Willard (1971, as Henrietta Stiles), and Bell, Book and Candle (1958, as Queenie). Rosalind Ayers played her in Gods and Monsters (1998).
