Element Lad is a fictional superhero comic book character owned by DC Comics, and a long standing member of the futuristic teen superhero group, the Legion of Super-Heroes.
A thousand years from now, Jan will be the sole survivor of the planet Trom, former home to a race of beings with element transmutation powers. The space pirate Roxxas murdered the entire race during a raid because they would not use their powers to create precious metals for him. Jan was the only survivor. The Science Police took Jan to an orphanage on Earth, trying to decide what to do with him. Jan made up his own mind when he found out that the Legion of Super-Heroes was going after Roxxas.
Element Lad has the power to transmute any substance into any element on the periodic table. His power allows him to sense the exact chemical composition of any substance.
Because his power could upset the economy by transmuting less valuable elements into gold and platinum, Jan had to promise the United Planets government to only use his power in the cause of the Legion.
Element Lad has been a member of the Legion ever since. He is considered to be one of the more spiritual members of the Legion, and often returns to Trom to use his powers to memorialize his people. He has flirtations in the past with Light Lass and Dream Girl. He is involved with Science Police Officer Shvaughn Erin who has served as the Science Police liaison to the Legion.
