Ed Harris

Edward Allen Harris (b. November 28, 1950, Tenafly, New Jersey) is a multiple Academy Award-nominated American actor. Harris has earned acclaim and award nominations in such films as Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock and The Hours.

Harris was a high school athlete and continued playing football while attending Columbia University. He transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he developed an interest in acting. He studied acting and performed in summer productions. He later studied at the California Institute of the Arts where he earned a degree in fine arts. With his education complete, Harris took to the stage. He also made his screen debut in the 1977 television movie The Amazing Howard Hughs and his feature film debut in Coma'. In 1982, he starred in George A. Romero's Knightriders. He starred in another Romero feature in 1982, the horror film, Creepshow.

Harris moved to New York and, in 1983, made his off Broadway debut in Sam Shepard's Fool for Love. He won an Obie Award for his performance. He also appeared in Precious Sons. Over the years, Harris has won critical acclaim both on stage and on screen. Harris became known playing real life individuals in such roles as astronaut, John Glenn in The Right Stuff, astronaut Gene Krantz in Apollo 13, artist Sydney Pollack in Pollack, E. Howard Hunt in Nixon and Beethoven in Copying Beethoven.

Between more serious roles, Harris has appeared in a few genre features. He may be best remembered for his role as Bud Brigman in The Abyss. He has also appeared in Stephen King's Needful Things as Sheriff Alan J. Pangborn, and King's The Stand. Other notable films include China Moon, The Rock with Nicolas Cage, Stepmom with Julia Roberts, The Human Stain with Anthony Hopkins, A History of Violence with Viggo Mortensen, Gone Baby Gone with Casey Affleck and 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

Harris married actress Amy Madican in 1983 and they have one child, daughter Lily.
