Earth-Minbari War

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

The Earth-Minbari War was a conflict between the Earth Alliance and the Minbari Federation in the Babylon 5 TV series. The war took place approximately ten years prior to the events depicted in the series. It began as the result of a disastrous first contact between the two races.

After the Dilgar War, the Earth Alliance became much more sure of itself. In seeking to capitalize on the victory over the Dilgar and extend its sphere of influence, the Earth Alliance sent an expedition into Minbari space to determine if they posed a threat to Earth’s new expansionist policy.

Alien advisors cautioned against the expedition but the warnings were ignored. The Minbari were a much older and more technologically advanced species than almost any other race in the known galaxy. They were also much more secretive and provincial. Most of the other races knew little about the Minbari other than to leave them alone.

The Earth Alliance starship Prometheus was the lead vessel in the Minbari expedition. The ship’s commanding officer, Captain Jankowski, panicked as a Minbari starship approached the Prometheus with its gun ports open. Among the Minbari warrior caste, this gesture is considered a show of respect and openness. Captain Jankowski misinterpreted it as provocative and fired a pre-emptive strike at the Minbari vessel.

The vessel on which Jankowski fired was not just an ordinary Minbari ship; it was the ship of the Minbari Grey Council. The attack caught the Minbari completely off guard and they suffered heavy casualties as a result. Two escort vessels were destroyed and the main cruiser was heavily damaged. Worst of all for the Minbari was the death of their most revered leader, Dukhat. His death drove the Minbari into a collective rage. They followed the Earth expedition back to their base and began what they called their “holy war” against humankind.

For the next two years, the Earth Alliance suffered consistent losses at the hands of the Minbari. The only victory the Earth Alliance had during the war was when John Sheridan destroyed the Minbari flagship called the Black Star. He lured the Black Star into an asteroid field he had previously mined with nuclear warheads and as the enemy vessel closed in, he set one of them off. The loss against the humans only enraged the Minbari more and they intensified their attacks on Earth Alliance targets. The war would only come to an end at the Battle of the Line, when the Minbari mysteriously surrendered.
