Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a 1964 black comedy directed by Stanley Kubrick and loosely based on Peter George Cold War thriller Red Alert. The film is a satire that makes light of the cold war and the doctrine of mutually assured destruction.

Sterling Hayden portrays insane US General Jack Ripper. Convinced the communists are conspiring to pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people, Ripper sends his bombers to destroy the USSR. Peter Sellers plays three different men attempting to stop the tragedy that will result if Ripper succeeds. In a meeting, the Soviet ambassador Alexi de Sadesky, informs U.S. President, Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers), that if the USSR is attacked it will set off a "doomsday machine" that will destroy all life on the planet. Muffely does his best to placate the drunken Soviet Premier and former Nazi genius Dr. Strangelove hoping to prevent the end of the world.

The film was nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture and its screenplay. Kubrick was also nominated as director and Sellers garnered a nomination for Best Actor. The film won three BAFTA awards for Best British Film, Best Film from any Source and Best British Art Direction.
