Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan (b. December 8, 1976) is a English actor born in Berlin, Germany to British parents. He is best known for his role as Merry Brandybuck in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and his role on the hit series Lost as Charlie Pace.
Monaghan was raised in Germany until age 12 when he moved with his family to Stockport, England. He attended St Anne's RC High School and later, Aquinas college where he studied English literature, drama, and geography. While in school, he began appearing in plays showing off his talent for imitating accents in a portrayal of American gangster, Bugsy Malone. He joined the Manchester Youth Theatre and began appearing in plays outside school. He drew the attention of a talent agent.
His agent landed him an audition for the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. He won the role of Hetty's sidekick Geoffrey Shawcross. He made his film debut as a Russian sailor in Hostile Waters. He went on to appear in This Is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper and the WWII miniseries Monsignor Renard before landing the role of Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
