Doctor Who, Season 27 (Series 1)

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Doctor Who Season 27 ended the years long production "hiatus" for the venerable series, returning it to viewers screens with an entirely new production team headed by writer/producer Russell T. Davies. Although insisting that the new show must be a continuation of the classic series, rather than a Battlestar Galactica-style "re-imagining," Mr. Davies nevertheless made some fundamental changes to the show's format and to the way in which it would be made. First, the show all but abandoned its traditional 23-minute cliffhanger format. To cater to modern audiences with little time and many programming choices, most stories would now be self-contained in single, faster-paced 43-minute episodes. However, a few multiple part stories remained as a nod to the greater story length and complexity of the show's past.

Further depth would be achieved by the addition of strong character arcs for both the new incarnation of the Doctor (played by actor Christopher Eccleston) and new companion Rose Tyler. Additionally, a season long story arc was added. All of these served to add a kind of depth that had usually been absent from the classic series, though some complain that the shorter story length of the new series has robbed the individual stories of depth.

Also unlike many earlier production teams, Mr. Davies was able to successfully lobby not only for one of the most hotly-contested time slots in England, but for the budget to produce a science fiction program that would look credible in that time slot.

The premier season of the new series is officially titled "series 1" by the BBC. However, fans usually continue the numbering from the classic series to avoid confusion. It began airing in England on March 26, 2005.
