Of the 800+ episodes of the classic (1963-1989) series of Doctor Who, fully 108 are Lost. Like many programs that aired in the 1960s, Doctor Who suffered from the overzealous erasure practices of companies that wished to reuse video tapes that were at the time exceedingly costly.
This mostly impacts the black and white era of the program, particularly seasons 3, 4 and 5, however the color prints of certain episodes from the early 70s are also lost.
Reconstructions
Although home video recorders were unheard of in the 1960s, a handful of fans made audio recordings of the original broadcasts. Due to the dedication of these fans, audio of all 108 missing episodes still exists. By selecting the best audio elements from several available fan recordings, the BBC has released remastered audio for a number of stories.
A number of fans have created reconstructions of several of the missing stories using the existing audio combined with still photographs taken during the production. Although the BBC officially frowns on this practice, they generally do not harass fans who produce and trade such videos as long as they are not sold for profit.
Additionally, the missing two episodes of The Invasion were animated using the original audio for the 2006 DVD release of that story. However, the BBC has not announced any plans to animate additional lost episodes.
