Doctor Who, Season 5

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Doctor Who, Season 5 would see important staff changes behind the scenes. However, the overall style and content of the show would be largely unchanged. Assistant script editor Peter Bryant ascended to the top script editing position to fill the hole left by the departure of his predecessor, Gerry Davis. But this was not the last promotion for Bryant this season. Producer Innes Lloyd had long been requesting a transfer to another program and decided to begin grooming Bryant to replace him. However, since Bryant had no experience in the producer's chair of any program, Lloyd decided to test his script editor by allowing him to produce the new season's first story, "The Tomb of the Cybermen." The result was an outstandingly well-remembered serial whose broadcast inspired the BBC's head of drama Sydney Newman (who is largely credited with creating the show) to phone to congratulate the fledgling producer. The producer's chair would become Bryant's full time when Lloyd was finally granted his requested transfer mid-season. Newman himself would depart the BBC mid-season.

Derrick Sherwin was brought in mid-season to fill the script editor position vacated by Bryant. Sherwin brought a new assistant script editor with him, his friend Terrance Dicks.

The team shared the concerns about the departure of the Daleks that had surfaced last season. Terry Nation was still trying to shop his maniacal creations to American television and showed no signs of ever allowing them to be used on Doctor Who again. Their response would be the same response that had been made last season: introduce more new monsters, hoping that the success of the Daleks could be repeated. In addition to bringing back last season's successful effort in this vein, the Cybermen, the team would also create two new races who would make multiple return appearances: the Yeti and the Ice Warriors.

Deborah Watling (Victoria) had decided that one season was enough and would be written out in the season's penultimate story, "Fury from the Deep." A new companion, Zoe Herriot would be introduced in the season's final story.

Additionally, "The Web of Fear" would introduce a recurring character who would soon become a mainstay of the program, Colonel (soon to be Brigadier) Lethbridge-Stewart.

This season began airing on September 2, 1967, resulting in a modest recovery of the program's ratings. The stories are considered by fans to be consistantly high in quality and they often rank this season among the best of the program's long history.
