Officially labeled "Series 3" by the BBC, Doctor Who, Season 29 began airing (in Britain) with a 60-minute Christmas special on December 25, 2006. This was followed by a regular season of thirteen 43-minute episodes which began airing on the BBC on March 31st, 2007. The SciFi Channel has announced that the US premier of the new season will be on July 6, 2007. The CBC has announced a Canadian premier date of June 18, 2007.
After the departure of Billie Piper (Rose) at the end of the previous season, the Doctor was joined briefly by popular British comedienne Catherine Tate, who played Donna (the titular bride of the Christmas special). With the commencement of the regular season, however, she was replaced by actress Freema Agyeman, who briefly appeared (as a different character) in the finale of the previous season. In season 29, Agyeman plays med. student Martha Jones. Additionally, Martha's mother, father, brother and sister appear in some episodes.
Popular season 27 character Captain Jack Harkness will apparently also pop up for several episodes.
This season, the Doctor journeyed to Elizabethan London, where he encountered William Shakespeare. Other episodes this season find him on the moon, on a spaceship hurtling toward the sun and (strangest of all) possibly settling down for good to live a normal life among humans.
In addition to the Daleks (who will return for a two-part story set in 1930s New York), at least one other enemy from the classic series (and possibly more) will be returning.
Also, the Doctor and Martha Jones are about to step into a new dimension - a cartoon one. David Tennant and Freema Agyeman will star in The Infinite Quest, a 13-part animated adventure that will run weekly in the second series of children's talk show/documentary series Totally Doctor Who.
