Doctor Who, Season 25

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Doctor Who Season 25 marked a shift toward a more serious tone. Producer John Nathan-Turner and script editor Andrew Cartmel felt that there was very little mystery left to title character. This was perceived to be a problem given that the character had originally been defined chiefly as an enigma. To this end, they contructed a plan to remystify the character by beginning to drop hints that there may be more to the Doctor's past than had previously been suspected. In Season 24, Sylvester McCoy had played a sort of vaudville comic version of the Doctor. But in Season 25, both the scripts and McCoy's performance revealed a darker, brooding character who manipulated events behind the scenes and lured arch enemies the Cybermen and the Daleks into intricate traps.

In addition to a very well received re-appearance by the Daleks, the season also contains one genuine classic, "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy."

The third story to be transmitted, "Silver Nemesis," was meant to be the 25th anniversary special, though other than repeated references to silver, there is little to distinguish it from other episodes of the era.

Season 25 began airing on October 10, 1988. Its fourteen 24-minute episodes were now shifted to Wednedsday nights. But, to the production team's horror, the show was still opposite ITV's ratings powerhouse Coronation Street.
