Doctor Who, Season 22 began airing in Britain on January 5, 1985. It had finally been returned to its traditional place on Saturday night after having taken somewhat of a ratings beating in the last two years. However, management at the BBC had decided to experiment with its format. The number of episodes was halved to 13 for this season, while the length of individual episodes was roughly doubled to 45 minutes.
Moreover, the show's future was becoming increasingly uncertain. Actor Colin Baker's portrayal of the sixth incarnation of the Doctor was not popular. It seems the production team's plan to make this incarnation of the Doctor initially unlikable had suceeded beyond their wildest dreams. Unfortunately, they were slow to complete his character arc to a more likable presence and his portrayal remains unpopular to this day.
Additionally, the series saw renewed criticism about its level of violence. Having traditionally been considered a family show in Britain, it was always vulnerable to this type of criticism. In this season, however, it seemed the Doctor himself had become more violent, a particularly damning criticism for a character who was supposed to be setting a good example for the children.
Still, the season features smart debuts by recurring villains The Rani and Sil. Welcome, if not particularly brilliant, returns of long time baddies the Daleks and the Cybermen and a particularly memorable guest appearance by the Doctor's second incarnation and his companion Jamie.
