Doctor Who, Season 11 would be the end of an era. After 5 seasons working on Doctor Who, producer Barry Letts had decided that this season would be his last. Script editor Terrance Dicks, who had been on the show even longer, would also leave at the end of the season. Their departures were not the only endings to occur this season.

Actor Roger Delgado had asked the production team to write out his character, the Master, because it was interfering with his ability to take other work. His final story was taking shape as the season 11 closer. Tragically, however, he died in a car crash before the season went before the cameras and a new season closer had to be written.

Katy Manning, who played companion character Jo Grant, had left at the end of the previous season. A new companion character, Sarah Jane Smith would be introducted at the start of the season.

The gradual phasing out of the Doctor's relationship with UNIT would continue this season. The season closer would mark the final appearance of Captain Mike Yates as a series regular. He would not appear again until the twentieth anniversary special, "The Five Doctors."

And finally, burdened by all the departures and by the untimely death of his friend, Roger Delgado, lead actor Jon Pertwee would eventually also announce that he would be leaving at the end of this season.

The season includes the first appearance of another popular alien race, the hard boiled clone soldiers called the Sontarans, and another return appearance by the Daleks. It also includes a sequel to season 9's popular "The Curse of Peladon."

A new title sequence would debut this season, along with a new diamond-shaped logo. With minor modifications in season 12, the "time tunnel" sequence would remain in use until the end of season 17 and heavily influence the design of the titles for both the TV Movie and the new series.

Season eleven began airing on December 12, 1973. Although ratings declined slightly this season, they remained far above where they had been at the start of the Pertwee era five years earlier. The outgoing team had succeeded in revitalizing a show that had been troubled when they arrived. It was the incoming team, however, who would propel the show to entirely new heights.
