Doctor Who, Season 10

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

For Doctor Who, Season 10, producer Barry Letts wanted once again to open with a gimmick that would draw viewers in for the season. To this end, he decided to open with an anniversary story that would allow all three of the Doctor's incarnations to meet one another. It was a concept he had earlier rejected as being too silly, but after many requests by fans, he finally decided that perhaps the program's tenth season was sufficient cause for a little celebratory silliness. The resulting story, "The Three Doctors," proved an enormous hit with viewers and introduced a key figure in Time Lord history, the legendary stellar engineer Omega.

The premier story would also achieve another goal for the season, that of liberating the Doctor from his exile on contemporary Earth. He would once again be free to travel through time and space.

The final goal that tickled Letts's fancy for this season was to top the record for the longest Doctor Who story ever. But, he was quickly discouraged from pursuing this on the basis that a story longer than the 12 episodes of The Dalek's Master Plan would have a difficult time holding viewers' attention for its entire length. Instead, Letts opted to go with two strongly-linked stories of six episodes each. Each of these would feature a popular returning villain: the Master in "Frontier in Space" and the Daleks in "Planet of the Daleks."

Katy Manning, who played companion character Jo Grant had informed the production team that she would be leaving at the end of the season. Her exit at the end of "The Green Death" would prove to be one of the best-handled and most touching departures in the series' long history

Topped off by fan-favorite "Carnival of Monsters," season 10 is often considered among the best of the Pertwee era. It began airing on December 30, 1972.
