Djimon Honsou (b. April 24, 1964) is an Oscar-nominated actor and former model, born in Contou, Benin. He is well known for his starring role in Amistad and his moving Academy Award nominated performance in In America. He has also appeared in several genre films.
Career
Honsou moved to Paris with his mother and brother at age 13. After leaving school, he wandered the streets, homeless until he was discovered by fashion designer Thierry Mugler. His striking appearance and 6'4 frame made him an ideal model. Honsou moved to Los Angeles to explore acting. He appeared in a Janet Jackson video alongside Antonio Sabato Jr. and made his film debut in Without You I'm Nothing. Early roles include a guest spot on Beverly Hills 90210, Unlawful Entry and the film Stargate.
In 1997, he landed his break out role in Steven Spielberg's Amistad. He followed up with another historic film about slavery, Ill Gotten Gains and the horror film Deep Rising. He had a recurring role on the medical drama ER and appeared with Russell Crowe in Gladiator. In 2002, he appeared in In America as an artist dying of AIDS. His performance garnered an Oscar nomination.
Other genre roles include Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, a recurring role on Alias as Kazari Bomani, Constantine with Keanu Reeves, The Island with Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor and the fantasy film Eragon as Ajihad.
Honsou is a naturalized American citizen.
