A Disaster Film is a movie in which the impact of a natural or man-made disaster is happening or has recently happened. Disaster films have become an increasingly popular subgenre particularly in science fiction. Common disaster themes include astronomical disasters such as asteroids, meteorites, or comets colliding with the Earth or another inhabited planet. Even more common are natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. More popular in science fiction are man-made disasters. Common examples are failed weapons experiments, science experiments gone awry, and films that play on the fear of nuclear disaster.
