Dirk Gently is the hero of two Douglas Adams novels: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. Dirk (born Svlad Cjelli) is a holistic detective, which means that he believes in the "fundamental interconnectedness of all things." (This means that the bill you receive for his services may include expenses that seem completely unrelated to your case.)

Dirk's comical and highly unorthodox methods prove effective in the end, as he solves cases involving the paranormal. The novels are pretty much what you would expect to see if Douglas Adams wrote mystery novels. A third Dirk Gently novel, The Salmon of Doubt was partially written at the time of Adams's death.
