Dhampir, (also spelled Dhampire, dhamphir and dhampyr) are mythical creatures, half vampire and half human. The legend is believed to originate with Balkan gypsies who believed that a child born of a vampire and a human would inherit the ability to see and destroy vampires.
Charlatans preyed on the beliefs of the Balkan peoples and traveled through the Carpathian Mountains and other parts of Europe claiming to be dhampirs. As the only ones able to see, trap, and kill the creatures, they would claim incidental deaths as the work of vampires and create an elaborate show, exhibiting the trapping of the creatures.
