Premise
A young amateur astronomer (Elijah Wood) identifies an object in the sky that is later recognized as a comet headed for Earth. As in the popular movie Armageddon released the same year, an attempt is made to destroy the object before it collides with the planet. Unlike Armageddon, the attempt is ultimately unsuccessful and people on Earth must prepare for their fate. Special caves are built in the United States and a lottery is drawn to randomly select 800,000 American citizens, as well as 200,000 scientists, soldiers and officials to be saved.
