Death is the absence of life or the act of dying of a living organism. Death has preoccupied mankind since the beginning and has sparked numerous philosophies and religions the intentions of which are to explain or give meaning to death and comfort those yet living who have lost. Death is a defining event in human culture the escape of which has inspired literature and science. So overarching is the event that death has taken on a personality in cultures and religions from the Grim Reaper to the Angel of Death.

Personifications

Death is often times referred to as the ‘Grim Reaper’ a personification of death, and is usually represented as a ghostly form or skeleton holding a scythe.

Death is often attributed with the taking of souls to the underworld.

Death or the Grim Reaper has appeared in countless films, movies, books, comics, both oral and written histories. Most often appearing as a skeleton or wraith.
