Dean Devlin is a former actor turned screenwriter, and producer well known for writing the Stargate movie and Independence Day. He was born on August 27, 1962, in New York City, New York. He began his film career as an actor playing parts on the TV Series Happy Days, Fame, and Hill Street Blues. He also played the role of Milton in the movie Real Genius, and appeared in Martians Go Home and a small role in Independence Day.
He first worked with Roland Emmerich as an actor on Moon 44. He began rewriting scripts and eventually wrote one of his own, Universal Soldier. The film was a success and he entered into a partnership with Emmerich. Their first movie together was Stargate which Devlin wrote and Emmerich directed. They then wrote Independence Day together which proved to be a blockbuster hit. Their next film together, Godzilla (1998) was a financial success but was panned by critics.
Devlin also helped developed the story and served as a producer of the SciFi Channel miniseries The Triangle. Most recently he has written the film Isobar with Emmerich due in 2007. He has served as producer on The Patriot, Eight Legged Freaks and The Librarian: Quest for the Spear.
Devlin formed his own production company, ElectricEntertainment which has produced the films Cellular, Flyboys and Who Killed the Electric Car.
