Dean Cain (b. July 31, 1966) is an American actor, producer and screenwriter born Dean George Tanaka in Mount Clemens, Michigan to actress Sharon Thomas and Roger Tanaka. He is best known for playing Superman in the television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman alongside Teri Hatcher.
Cain's parents divorced before his birth and he and brother, Roger Cain, were adopted by their stepfather, director Christopher Cain. Cain has one half sister, Krisinda Cain. The family moved to Malibu, California and he attended Santa Monica High School where he proved a superior athlete earning seventeen athletic scholarships which he turned down to attend Princeton University. He continued playing sports, participating in volleyball and football. While at Princeton, he dated actress Brooke Shields. He graduated with a degree in history and focused on professional football, signing with the Buffalo Bills. A career in sports was not to be, however, as he suffered a knee injury in training camp ending that dream.
Cain turned his attention to acting and screenwriting. He appeared in several commercials and early roles included appearances on Christine Cromwell, Grapevine, A Different World and Beverly Hills 90210. In 1993, Cain landed the role of Superman/Clark Kent in the latest Superman franchise creation Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman. He starred opposite Teri Hatcher for the series' four seasons. Following the end of the series, great roles were few for both Cain and Hatcher. He appeared in Best Men, Dogboys, Futuresport and Fantasy Island and took on the job of host of Ripley's Believe It or Not!.
Cain has appeared in the genre features For the Cause, Dragon Fighter, which he also produced; Post Impact; the comedic zombie flick Dead & Deader and Urban Decay. Other notable roles include a recurring role on The Division, the starring role in The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story, and guest appearances on Hope and Faith, and Las Vegas.
