Plot

George Lass was just like any other eighteen-year-old in America: lazy, irresponsible, and not sure where her life is headed. On her first day at her new job, she is hit by a zero-gravity toilet from the de-orbiting space station, Mir. Unlike other people, however, George does not travel to the afterlife, but rather joins the ranks of the reapers.

The reapers retain all knowledge of their previous life, but their appearance is different from that of living people. Because George is now dead, she is assigned a new identity: Millie. Upon learning that grim reapers do not get paid, she searches for a daytime job—at the same place where she died. Millie's reception at Happy Time Temporary Services is much better than George's, and she starts to get along well with her boss, Delores Herbig (Christine Willes). She and the rest of the reapers all hang out at Der Waffle Haus, where Rube hands out Post-It notes listing souls for each of them to take.

George learns about all of the inner workings of death, such as the "Estimated Time of Death," or ETD, and certain rules that can or cannot be broken. Unfortunately, she usually finds out the hard way which rules should not be broken. When she purposefully stops a man from dying on time, she is hunted relentlessly by Gravelings, small gremlin-like creatures that cause the accidents in which people die.
