David Twohy (b. October 18, 1955), California) is an American director and screenwriter with several genre credits to his name. Twohy attended California State University, Long Beach where he minored in theater arts and earned a degree in radio/television/film. Twohy was named one of Entertainment Weekly's "100 most creative people in Hollywood" for his work in genre films.
Twohy's early writing work includes the scifi-horror feature Critters 2: The Main Course, 1989's Warlock and Grand Tour: Disaster in Time which he also directed. He gained significant attention for his screenplay The Fugitive which starred Harrison Ford and garnered an Edgar Award nomination. In 1994 he wrote the screenplay for Terminal Velocity which starred Charlie Sheen and Nastassja Kinski. His next film, the dystopian adventure Waterworld starred Kevin Costner was a critical and financial failure.
Twohy returned to directing with the 1996 film The Arrival. The alien invasion thriller starred Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Crouse. He took a short break from the genre to write the screenplay for G.I. Jane a dramatic film starring Demi Moore. He followed up with Pitch Black which he wrote and directed. The film produced a sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick which he also wrote and directed. Twohy's other films include Imposter, starring Gary Sinise and Mehki Phifer and the horror thriller Below. Twohy is slated to write the sequel to the action thriller The Italian Job, The Brazilian Job.
