David Tennant

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

David Tennant (April 18, 1971 Bathgate, Lothian, Scotland, UK - ) is the stage name of actor David MacDonald, who has gained recent fame in the fantasy and sci-fi communities both for being the tenth actor to play the title role in long-running series Doctor Who and for portraying bad guy Barty Crouch Jr. in the Harry Potter films.

Born April 18, 1971, in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, Tennant claims he knew by the age of three what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to be an actor. In fact, he wrote an essay while in grammar school about how it was his greatest desire to play the Doctor on TV.

Having graduated from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Tennant began his theatrical career in a production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui by the 7:84 Theatre Company, a Scottish left-wing theater group whose plays frequently advocated Scottish independence.

Quickly becoming a respected member of the theatrical community, Tennent would go on to star in many productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company, including the comedic roles of Touchstone in As You Like It, Antipholus of Syracuse in The Comedy of Errors and Captain Jack Absolute in The Rivals as well as the tragic role of Romeo.

Tennant's television carreer began in 1993 with an appearance on Rab C. Nesbitt, a comedy series about a drunken Scottsman. But, he quickly graduated to higher profile roles in several BBC productions, including Campbell on Takin' Over the Asylum (1994), Mr. Gibson on He Knew He Was Right. (2004) and as Doctor Gordon Briscoe in The Quartermass Experiment. (2005).

Also in 2005, Tennant would appear in the title role of the miniseries Casanova, penned by new Doctor Who producer Russell T. Davies and in the small role of Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Impressed by Tennant, Davies cast him to replace Christopher Eccleston as the lead in Doctor Who, the role that Tennant claims inspired him to become an actor in the first place. The actor currently remains in this role and has announced no plans to leave it.
