Nykl as Radek Zalenka on "Stargate Atlantis"
David Nykl is a Canadian actor best known for his role on Stargate Atlantis as Dr. Radek Zelenka. He was born in 1967 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After the communist occupation in 1968, his family moved to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. His father worked as a structural engineer and his mother a nurse.
Nykl began acting in school plays and commercials in his youth. He also took acting and dance classes. He directed his first play, the Murder Room during his senior year of high school. He then attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and graduated with a degree in the arts. He went to work in theatre for several years in Vancouver and toured Europe with Ironworks. He visited Prague where he performed at the KASPAR theatre in the role of Attahulpa, in Royal Hunt of the Sun.
Nykl began work in film and television in the 1990s. He had roles in the films Crackerjack 2, Escape Velocity, Hell Mountain, Joan of Arc and Prague Duet. He has also guest starred on the TV Series Seven Days, The Dead Zone, Jake 2.0, and Eureka.
In 2004 he became a recurring character on Stargate Atlantis. His character, Zelenka, makes use of his Czech heritage and translating his Czech mutterings is a fun past time of many fans. Nykl also speaks French and Spanish.
