David Lynch (born January 20, 1946 in Missoula, Montana) is an American screenwriter, director, and producer.
Lynch's works are known for a bizarre sense of hyper-reality. Audiences react strongly emotionally, but may feel that what they are seeing is dreamlike.
Lynch's 1977 movie, Eraserhead, was often shown as at midnight. Many people were repulsed by it, but it helped establish Lynch as a director with vision and a skilled filmmaker.
The Elephant Man earned Lynch two Oscar nominations (one for directing and a shared nomination for the screenplay).
His 1984 take on the sci-fi classic Dune was less well received. However, Blue Velvet in 1986 is considered a classic by many.
Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks became a cultural touchstone, even while some TV watchers found it baffling.
